EMBRACING BEING SINGLE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday season is officially here! A time to be jolly with family, romantic partners, and friends. A beautiful acquaintance of mine recently ended a seemingly promising romantic relationship; just in time for the holidays. For many people who are single and/or do not get the luxury of having their loved ones around during the holidays, this time of year can amplify feelings of loneliness or longing.

The holidays tend to highlight the beauty of spending time with a significant other or with family, but being single during the holidays doesn’t have to translate to feeling left out. In fact, it can be a time to embrace your independence, focus on self-care, and create meaningful memories in ways that please you the most.

Ensure to make the most of being single during the holidays, filling it with good cheer and satisfaction.

HOW TO ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS AS A SINGLE PERSON

Let Go of Societal Pressures:

The holidays can sometimes make single people feel like they are missing out or that something is wrong with them. This is a myth. You have to recognize and acknowledge that your worth is not determined by your relationship status, and that you don’t need to be in a relationship to enjoy the holidays.

Shift your mindset from focusing on the idea that something is “missing” to focusing on the freedom and opportunities that come with being single.

Indulge In Self-Care:

Being single doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing seeing as it gives you the opportunity to focus on yourself without distractions. You can use the holidays as a chance to indulge in self-care routines that nourish your body, mind, and spirit.

You should take time to focus on your well-being and comfort through skincare, haircare, or simply resting and rejuvenating. Simply treat yourself to a relaxing bubble bath, a facial, and/or a full-body massage.

Call Loved Ones:

If distance or life circumstances prevent you from being physically close to family, schedule virtual catch-ups to make sure you still stay connected. A heartfelt message or video chat can help you stay in the spirit of the holidays.

Observe Meditation And Mindfulness:

Centering yourself and staying grounded can help ease the stress of the holidays. Meditation, gratitude exercises, or even writing in a gratitude journal can help you stay focused on the positive aspects of your life.

Deepen Good Connections:

While the holidays might emphasize romantic relationships, it’s a time to celebrate all kinds of healthy connections. Reach out to friends, family, and even acquaintances you might enjoy talking to and possibly spending time with.

Plan A Friendsgiving Or Holiday Hangout:

Being single gives you the flexibility to start your own holiday traditions, If you’re not (physically or otherwise) close to family or you just want to create your own tradition, consider hosting a holiday dinner or party for your friends. “Friendsgiving”, a movie marathon, or a cozy night with board games, music, and refreshments are all fun events to consider. Surrounding yourself with supportive, fun people can make the holidays feel more special.

Pack Your Bag(s) And Explore:

The holidays offer you the chance of a solo trip if you’ve been feeling the need to get away. Traveling alone can be an incredibly freeing experience as it allows you to explore places at your own pace.

Treat Yourself To Something Special:

You can either buy yourself a thoughtful gift, splurge on your favorite comfort food or item, or attend a holiday event, do something just for you. Being single allows you to enjoy what you love how you want to experience it.

Give Back To A Noble Cause:

Giving back, especially during the holidays, can be fulfilling. You can volunteer at a shelter, food bank, or local charity to help you form bonds with others while contributing to a good cause. Plus, it’s a great way to shift the focus away from “what I don’t have” to “what I can give”.

Reflect On The Year:

Take time to reflect on your personal growth, achievements, and the lessons you’ve learned throughout the year. You could start a journal, write down your thoughts about the year gone by, and make plans for the year ahead.

Abstain From Comparing:

There will be seemingly endless posts of romantic dates, family gatherings, and cozy moments with loved ones on social media. While it’s natural to feel a twinge of comparison, remember that what you see online is not the full picture and your holiday doesn’t have to look like someone else’s.

Stay Active:

It’s easy to become sedentary during the winter months, worsening the sense of loneliness. Staying physically active can improve your mood during the holidays.

If you can brave the cold, take winter walks. There’s something incredibly refreshing about breathing in crisp air and taking in winter’s beauty. You can also go ice skating or take part in other seasonal activities.

If going out in the cold doesn’t appeal to you, consider home workouts or yoga sessions. Regular exercise keeps you healthy and it can also give you a much-needed energy boost during the holidays.

You can also consider joining a fitness class.

Learn To Enjoy Your Own Company:

One of the best ways to make the most of being single during the holidays is to embrace it wholeheartedly. Don’t force yourself to be anything other than what you are in the moment.

Take pleasure in being alone with your thoughts, your hobbies, and your passions. It’s okay to indulge in quiet, reflective time during the holidays. Sometimes, the most peaceful moments come when we’re not distracted by others.

Being single during the holidays can be an opportunity to reconnect with yourself, establish new traditions, and create fulfilling experiences. The holidays are what you make of it, so make it wonderful!

Here’s to good cheer and fulfillment during the holidays and beyond🥂

With love, Phoenix.
